The 'Check for update' button on Pixel/Nexus devices still isn't pulling the latest OTAs as promised, but it'll be fixed in 2018

There was much celebration in the Android Police virtual HQ earlier this year when Googler Elliott Hughes revealed that the much-maligned "Check for update" button was getting an overhaul. After so many pointless presses, this button would finally do something on Pixel and Nexus devices. If there was an update available, the button would download it. However, this feature still isn't working. According to Hughes, the bug that broke this feature will be fixed in early 2018.

Google is pushing final 8.1 OTA updates to Pixel 2 and 2 XL devices on the beta

Android 8.1 Oreo is final just a few weeks after the second developer preview rolled out. You can get the system images and OTA files for manual installation, and OTAs are hitting phones running 8.0. That's not all—devices in the developer preview that were running DP2 are also seeing an OTA update today.

[Update: More info] OnePlus confirms it won't have Project Treble on any current devices, including the OnePlus 5T

Android updates have never been very fast or consistent, but Google took some steps to improve the process several months ago. That's when it announced Project Treble, a feature of Android Oreo and later that makes OTAs modular. Devices that launch with Oreo will support Treble, but those updated to Oreo won't—at least mostly. OnePlus has confirmed on its forums that Treble won't be part of any current devices, including the new OnePlus 5T.

Google's December 2017 security bulletin is up, system updates go live tomorrow (December 5th)

It's almost time for another round of updates to Google's Android devices. The currently supported Pixels and Nexus phones should begin seeing new builds tomorrow, but Google already has the latest security bulletin up to detail what's fixed in the new version. There don't appear to be any functional updates this month, though.

You have to hand it to NVIDIA—it's kept the SHIELD Tablet updated for more than three years now. That's about three years longer than most Android tablets. Today, the SHIELD Tablet is getting the 5.3 upgrade, which includes a few little bug fixes along with one big fix for the KRACK vulnerability.

Android 8.0 Oreo for unlocked HTC U11 is here [Update]

Owners of the unlocked HTC U11 can expect a treat to help them get through their post-holiday weekend Monday blues. According to a tweet from Mo Versi, HTC's VP of Product Management for the Americas region, the unlocked version of the U11 will receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update tomorrow (Monday, November 27th). This comes about a week and a half after HTC began rolling out the Oreo update for U11 owners in Taiwan.

OnePlus rolls out OxygenOS 5.0 OTA, the first official Oreo build for the OnePlus 3/3T

The new 5T hotness in town is getting a lot of attention these days, but OnePlus is giving owners of its 2016 flagship smartphones a big pat on the back today with its rollout of OxygenOS 5.0, its first official Android Oreo OTA for the 3 and 3T. This comes about a month after owners of these devices were able to get Oreo through the Open Beta program. OnePlus continues to boast impressive turnaround times for its stable build updates.

Google posts system images and OTA files for Pixel 2 XL November update, plus new builds for Pixel 2 [Update: No KRACK update]

Google started rolling out its November patches yesterday, but the Pixel 2 XL was conspicuously absent until later in the day. Even when the OTA began rolling out, Google had not posted the files on its developer site. Now, those files are live and ready for sideloading. The Pixel 2 also has some new builds in addition to the ones from yesterday.

Essential rolling out OTA (build NMJ20D) with fingerprint sensor gestures, KRACK fix, and more

Essential's software on the Essential Phone had some issues at launch, but the team has rolled out multiple updates since then to resolve bugs and add new features. Today, the company is sending out a new build of Nougat with a fix for that troublesome KRACK vulnerability. It includes a few new things, too.
