AutoNotification lets you add a "Mark as Read" icon to Gmail notifications

Joao from joaomgcd, better known for his series of "Auto-" apps and Join, is one of our favorite tinkering developers. He always manages to find a way to make Android do things it's not supposed to, and the latest "hack" he has come up with is a new "Read" button on Gmail notifications. You know how you sometimes receive emails with a few words that are easily legible from the notification without having to open the entire Gmail app, or how you get automated emails which content you already know without opening them, and you just want a quick way to mark them as read without deleting or archiving them?

Latest Gmail and Maps versions have white/inverted nav bars on Android 8.1

White navigation bars are nothing new, with LG phones having had them as options for many years and Samsung recently making them the default to reduce burn-in on its Galaxy phones. Now they're becoming abundant in Google phones with the introduction of Android 8.1 Oreo, both for aesthetic effect and in an attempt to minimize burn-in. Their latest appearances on 8.1 are in Gmail and Maps, where they've found new homes.

G Suite launches Gmail Add-ons for integrating popular third-party apps

G Suite update season is fully upon us, so it seems. First, we got the long-awaited material redesign of Google Calendar, which is available to everyone now that it meets the needs of Google's most important G-Suite customers. Gmail is working on snooze, smart grouping, and a Material Design interface for the web

Do you remember the NEXT Live EMEA 2017 G Suite product roadmap talk where we discovered a small line of text telling us Calendar would get a new web interface in Q4 2017? As it turns out, there's more to that presentation, but we're so perpetually busy here that we couldn't check out the video in its entirety. If we did, we would have spotted something else, just as interesting.

At about 31" into the video, we get introduced to several new features that the G Suite team is working on implementing in Gmail: smart reply, smart groupings, and snooze.

New Highlights section is starting to roll out to Google Inbox users

Back in the summer, Cody took an in-depth look at the latest update to Inbox by Gmail and found evidence for a new feature called Highlights. He found that Google was planning to introduce a section at the top of Inbox that would bring attention to priority emails. Now, it looks like the feature has been turned on by Google, for some people at least.

Android Oreo seems to have broken Exchange sync in Gmail

The bug watch continues here at Android Police. It's not that we love these infamous little buggers that annoy us by breaking things that used to work or completely blocking us from using certain features, it's that we think you might appreciate knowing you're not the only one if you were facing the same issue, and we may, just a little bit, believe that highlighting something on this site helps get it fixed a teeny bit faster. (Just nod and agree, for our ego.)

The latest bug to fall on our radar is affecting users on Android Oreo who have noticed that Gmail keeps running in the background, trying to sync, but failing.

Astro's voice assistant is dedicated to managing your emails

The Astro email app launched earlier in the year with the promise of helping you to clean up your inbox using AI. It's available for Office 365 and Gmail accounts and had garnered praise from users of both services. There's an integration that lets you manage your emails from Slack, and since June it's been possible to manage your emails with Astrobot Voice via an Alexa Skill on Amazon's Echo speaker. That same voice assistant functionality is now available directly from the app.

Gmail's Smart Reply is now available in Spanish on both Android and iOS

Back in May, Google announced Smart Reply for Gmail, a feature that would suggest three simple responses based on the email that was sent to you. This was first made available for English, but Spanish was promised to come "in the coming weeks." Two months later, Spanish speakers can finally use Smart Reply for quick and easy responses.
