Latest Gmail and Maps versions have white/inverted nav bars on Android 8.1

White navigation bars are nothing new, with LG phones having had them as options for many years and Samsung recently making them the default to reduce burn-in on its Galaxy phones. Now they're becoming abundant in Google phones with the introduction of Android 8.1 Oreo, both for aesthetic effect and in an attempt to minimize burn-in. Their latest appearances on 8.1 are in Gmail and Maps, where they've found new homes.

[Update: Dimming is system-wide] Android 8.1 feature spotlight: Settings now has a colored navigation bar that dims

The Android 8.1 Oreo developer preview dropped today, and with it come some new features that we've been discovering. Latest T-Mobile Galaxy S8 and S8+ update allows nav bar to be hidden, loses black fill option

One of the Galaxy S8's highlights is its extremely long 18.5:9 AMOLED display. It allows for more content while reading, as well as easier multitasking. Galaxy S8 and S8+ get Pixel navigation buttons with custom overlay

It's just an overlay, and it does have a couple of small bugs of its own. But, it is a basic and straightforward little feature that can improve your aesthetic quality of life. At least, if you find Samsung's stock look is a bit too busy for your tastes.

Case in point: we published an article about a new YouTube comments layout on Android just two days ago, and here you are, reading another one today. As you may have guessed from the title, the bottom nav bar is back, but with some nice tweaks from the last time we saw it. It's virtually identical to iOS's YouTube app now.

Hands-on with MUVIZ Nav Bar Audio Visualizer: Really neat if you are into this sort of thing

Music is definitely everywhere. From our own personal libraries and streaming stations to advertisements and entertainment, it is a fundamental part of who we are as individuals and as a culture (for better or for worse). Since music is just noise (how's that for a scientific breakthrough), I have always found it neat to see the visual representation of the soundwaves in line with the song that is playing. Back when Windows Media Player was a thing, I always turned on the visualizer, finding it much more entertaining than staring at the album art — or worse, the placeholder image when no art was available.
