Fitbit Ionic review: Not the smartest smartwatch

Fitbit started out making simple step counters that clipped on your pocket, but over time it added displays, exercise tracking, heart rate monitors, and more. Many of its rivals have changed their focus or simply gone out of business, but Fitbit is fast becoming a household name. The last few wrist-based Fitbit devices have been vaguely smartwatch-like, but the true Fitbit smartwatch has been elusive—until now. After acquiring some bits from the now-defunct Pebble, Fitbit has its very own smartwatch called the Ionic.

This device has a definite "Fitbit" aesthetic. It's thick, and the screen is rectangular and rather small. You want corners?

[Deal Alert] Huawei Watch 2 down to $179 ($120 off) and Watch 2 Classic for $219 ($148 off)

There aren't as many big players making Android Wear watches right now, but Huawei is one of them. The second-gen Huawei Watch came out earlier this year, and the price has remained pretty close to the MSRP. However, both versions of the watch are on sale today for more than $100 off MSRP.

[Deal Alert] Verizon's discontinued Wear24 smartwatch pops up on eBay for $129.99 ($220 off)

Verizon tried its hand at selling an Android Wear smartwatch earlier this year, but the $350 Wear24 was a flop and Verizon quietly pulled it after just four months. Perhaps this smartwatch will be more appealing now at a steep discount. The Wear24 has appeared on eBay for just $129.99, less than half the original price. Verizon's loss is your gain.

Samsung Gear Sport review: A smartwatch regular people might actually buy

Smartwatches were supposed to be the Next Big ThingTM a few years ago when Samsung launched the original Android-powered Galaxy Gear. That device came with a laundry list of problems, but the company quickly reassessed and got on board with Android Wear while also dabbling with the Tizen wearable OS. When Samsung quietly stepped back from Android Wear, many of us thought it was a mistake. With the release of the Gear Sport, it's looking like Samsung made the right call.

The Gear Sport is a followup to last year's Gear S3. Like that watch, the Sport has a round Super AMOLED display, a rotating bezel, and the Tizen wearable OS.

iHeartRadio releases standalone app for Android Wear 2.0 [APK Download]

Internet radio app iHeartRadio is pretty popular with Android users and with good reason. It's built up an impressive feature set to go along with its attractive interface and is frequently updated with useful additions, such as Google Home support earlier in the year. The latest version brings with it a dedicated Android Wear 2.0 app, and you don't need your phone for it to work.

Fitbit has been making fitness trackers for years, but we now have a launch date for the company's very first smartwatch. The Ionic launches on October 1st for $299.95, but that's not all. Fitbit is also releasing its first Bluetooth headphones on that same day for $129.95.

Verizon discontinues the Wear24 smartwatch after just 4 months

Verizon announced its very own Android Wear smartwatch earlier this year, powered by its LTE network. It started selling the Wear24 in May for $300 on contract and $350 without one. That seemed like an interesting proposition when consumers have shown little interest even in cheap smartwatches. Verizon didn't let this product languish too long, though. We've confirmed with the carrier that Wear24 is dead.

Fossil Q Venture and Explorist appear to be on sale ahead of 9/24 launch date

Fossil announced two new Android Wear smartwatches a few months ago, but they weren't supposed to be out until September 24th. Pre-orders for the Q Venture and Q Explorist popped up last month, and now most of the models appear to be on sale a bit early. You can get the watches from Fossil or at eBags.

Huawei Band 2 Pro fitness tracker arrives in the US for $69

As the novelty of smartwatches begins to wear off a little (pun intended), the dust is settling and those companies capable of making passable devices are beginning to become more apparent. Huawei is one of them, and even though the Watch 2 Classic and Watch 2 Sport weren't quite as impressive as had been hoped, they still make for a good introduction to the Android Wear ecosystem if you can get a good deal on them. If you want something a little simpler that's just for sports, Huawei announced the Band 2 Pro fitness tracker earlier in the year with no Android Wear in sight.

Facer updated to v4.0 with designs from traditional watchmakers, wrist selfies, and more

We've been talking about Facer since the early days of Android Wear; even before third-party watch faces were officially supported. The app has gone through some big changes over the years, and today it's getting one of its largest updates ever. Facer 4.0 adds content from a number of traditional watchmakers, along with a revamped website, wrist selfies (yes, really), and a system to detect copyright infringement. Okay, you're probably not going to be happy about that last one.
