Android platform distribution for October 2017 includes the first hint of Oreo at 0.2%

Another month, another update to the Google Developer dashboards. This time there's something new in the Android version stats, although it's a very, very small something. After the unsurprising no-show last month, Android 8.0 Oreo has made its first appearance this time with a grand total of 0.2% device share.

Amazon quietly announces Fire OS 6, based on Android Nougat

Amazon's fork of Android is known as Fire OS, and it ships on all of the company's tablets and TV devices. HTC One M9 on Verizon updated to Android 7.0 Nougat

HTC isn't exactly known for speedy updates, but the company has been known to push them quickly in some cases. This is definitely not one of those cases, but it would seem to be more Verizon's fault than HTC's. Slightly over a year since the release of Android 7.0, the One M9 on Verizon is finally getting a Nougat update.

Android platform distribution updated for September 2017 with another small gain for Nougat and no sign of Oreo

There's an Apple event happening at this moment, during which the company will probably brag about how unified its iOS user base it. Google chose right now to update the platform versions in the developer dashboard. Android is, well, not entirely unified, but that's nothing new. Nougat is still gaining this month, Marshmallow is on the decline, and there's no sign of Oreo yet.

BlackBerry confirms the Priv won't get Android Nougat

The BlackBerry Priv was an odd device for many reasons. It was the first Android phone from BlackBerry, it was a flagship device with a physical keyboard, and it was the last phone manufactured in-house by BlackBerry. But as many Priv owners have probably been expecting, it won't receive further updates.

[Update: September security patches still to come] Google releases Android's September security bulletin, new images and OTAs to follow

The September 2017 Android security update is here, and the bulletin contains the usual details about vulnerabilities that could be affecting various Android devices. Images and OTAs that include the September patches should protect against any possible issues, but so far they're only available for the Nexus 9 on Android 7.1.1. There are no Android 8.0 Oreo images with September patches for Pixel or Nexus devices live yet, but it shouldn't be too long before they are added.

Verizon Ellipsis 8 HD tablet gets Android 7.0 Nougat OTA

History says we're not huge fans of Verizon's Ellipsis tablet series, but our bad opinion of them is a little tamed by the fact that Verizon bothers to at least roll one major update to them. That's the case with the Ellipsis 8 HD, which launched with Marshmallow back in November of 2016, and is now getting its taste of Nougat.

Once the OTA has rolled out to your tablet, you will have software version SUN1_20A10 and Android 7.0. That means multi-window mode and quick app switching, customizable quick settings, notification bundling and quick reply, and everything we've come to expect of Nougat.

Google is finally pushing Android 7.1.1 to the Nexus 6 again

The Nexus 6 was the launch device for Android 5.0 Lollipop back in 2014, and it's been getting updates ever since. The problem, however, is not all those updates have been good. After deploying some bugged OTA updates earlier this year, Google is finally sending out Android 7.1.1 to the Nexus 6.
